One of the most common causes of damage to water pipes is crushing by tree roots, especially in less built-up areas like Ryde where there are a lot of older homes with large trees in relatively close proximity.
We were contacted by a customer who was concerned they may have a water leak as they had received an unusually high water bill and wanted us to investigate.
We attended the residence and observed that the water meter was running and there was water coming through a retaining wall down hill from the water meter.
Using our Rigid Navitrak we were able to trace the location of the water service from the water meter towards the house and were able to determine that the water service ran under a large tree in the front yard. We dug a hole downstream of the tree and confirmed that the broken water pipe was under the tree as expected.
Based on our extensive experience in repairing tree damaged water pipes we decided to replace the water service by rerouting it by a significant distance around the tree to avoid any future damage by roots.
The photograph shows us using a Chain Trench Digger to excavate for the new water pipe. The beauty of this equipment is that it digs a narrow trench which significantly reduces the damage to any finished landscape areas.
The water service was successfully tested on completion of the works and everything was back to normal.
If you receive an unusually high water bill and think it may be due to a broken water pipe it’s best to give us a call and have it checked as soon as possible.
